Privacy Policy

Spokn is a voice-to-text dictation app for iPhone. This Privacy Policy explains what information Spokn does and does not collect, and how the app handles your audio and transcriptions.

Spokn does not collect personal data. Spokn has no servers, no user accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party tracking. Everything described below happens on your iPhone unless you explicitly choose to export a transcription.

What Spokn does on your device

• Audio recording. When you tap to record, Spokn captures audio from your iPhone's microphone and writes it to a private file inside the Spokn app sandbox. You can delete recordings at any time from the Library tab.
• Speech recognition. Spokn passes the recorded audio to Apple's speech recognition framework. Where supported, recognition runs entirely on-device. On devices or languages where on-device recognition is unavailable, Apple's framework may transmit audio to Apple's servers solely to perform recognition. This processing is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy; Spokn does not retain or have access to anything Apple receives.
• AI cleanup. Spokn uses Apple Foundation Models (the same on-device AI behind Apple Intelligence) to remove filler words and tidy up punctuation. This processing runs entirely on your iPhone and never leaves the device.
• Storage. Recordings, transcriptions, and notebook organization are stored locally in the Spokn app sandbox using SwiftData. They are protected by iOS's standard data protection (encrypted at rest when your device is locked).

Optional cloud destinations

Spokn supports exporting transcriptions to your iCloud Drive. When enabled in Settings, Spokn writes a copy of each new transcription as a text file into your personal iCloud Drive container (iCloud Drive › Spokn). This is your iCloud account, governed by your existing iCloud privacy settings — Spokn does not have its own cloud, and the developer cannot access these files.

iCloud export is off by default. You can enable or disable it at any time in Settings › Storage & Sync.

What Spokn does NOT do

• No analytics or telemetry — Spokn does not measure how you use the app.
• No advertising or third-party SDKs — Spokn includes only Apple frameworks.
• No accounts or sign-in — there is nothing to register, and no contact data is requested.
• No background uploads — audio and transcriptions never leave your device unless you turn on iCloud Drive export.
• No selling or sharing of any data with third parties — there is no data to sell.

Permissions Spokn requests

• Microphone. Required to record your voice. Spokn cannot function without it. iOS prompts you the first time you start a recording.
• Speech Recognition. Required so Apple's framework can convert your audio to text. iOS prompts you the first time you start a recording.
• CarPlay. If you choose to use Spokn in CarPlay, your car's CarPlay system displays the Spokn template. CarPlay is governed by Apple and your car manufacturer; Spokn does not transmit any data to or from your car beyond what iOS standard CarPlay provides.

You can revoke any of these permissions at any time in iOS Settings > Spokn.

Children's privacy

Spokn is not directed at children under 13. Spokn does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated text will appear at this URL with a revised "Last updated" date. Material changes will also be highlighted in app release notes.
